Nassim Season 2 Episode 60

Text me your thoughts!

In this episode, I sit down with Jason Carney, Director of Coaching at FC Portland Soccer Academy, Beaverton High School Boys Head Coach, and two-time Coach of the Year (2023 & 2024). Originally from Bolton, England, Jason brings over two decades of experience as a player, coach, and leader in youth soccer development.

Before moving to the U.S. in 2003, Jason played semi-professionally for 10 years and coached in the academy of Championship side Preston North End FC. Since then, he’s built a lasting impact on U.S. soccer, holding a USSF A License and UEFA B License, and shaping the next generation of players and coaches through thoughtful, player-centered leadership.

Jason is also the author of You Versus Yourself, The Soccer Coach’s Blueprint, and the eye-opening book US Grassroots Soccer – Great on Paper, S**t on Grass. His work and philosophy center around developing the person before the athlete, with a strong emphasis on the mental side of the game—resilience, self-awareness, and team culture.

In this conversation, we explore Jason’s journey, his powerful views on coaching and leadership, and the mindset shifts needed to create long-term growth in youth soccer. Whether you're a coach, parent, or athlete, you’ll take away meaningful insights on how to grow stronger—on and off the field.
